Working in the legacy of Northern Renaissance precision and the contemporary sublime, my practice examines the mechanics of scale, attention, and duration. Working in oil on canvas and wood panel, I distil personal imagery into dense, luminous works that resist immediate legibility. Through strategies of veiling and spatial compression, the paintings enforce a tension between intimacy and distance, requiring a sustained physical encounter.

The work oscillates between the immersive, full-scale exploration of natural forms and the concentrated isolation of the miniature. Drawing from a recurring lexicon of motifs, the figure, architectural elements, and the natural world. I create sites where memory and psychological space are embedded into the surface. By either filling the support with detail or marooning fragments within an expansive void, the work generates a spatial excess that counters the visual saturation of screen-dominated culture.

By co-opting the proportions of the handheld screen while demanding the concentration of historical painting, the work subverts contemporary expectations of speed. This practice is a commitment to the "slow image": a mode of resistance where meaning emerges through material layering, formal restraint, and the reclaimed necessity of a singular gaze.

Hannah-Sophia Guerriero (b.2002 Oldham) is a UK-based painter whose work is held in several UK private collections. She is currently completing her BA in Painting and Printmaking (Fourth Year) at The Glasgow School of Art.

Guerriero was selected to be part of Louise Giovanelli's Apollo Painting School programme in 2024. She has presented a solo exhibition, Veils of Space (Alma Pearl Gallery, London, 2025), and has exhibited widely in the UK and internationally, including at Manchester Art Gallery, Soup Gallery, Alice Amati, and the Cambellotti Museum, Italy. She also participated in an international exchange programme in Germany and will take part in an upcoming group exhibition at The Grundy Art Gallery, Blackpool.

Guerriero’s painting practice interrogates the contemporary sublime, examining how space is experienced through luminous material layering and formal restraint. Her work engages the necessary singularity of the gaze, creating a dialogue between the figure, architectural elements, and the all-over natural forms to counter digital saturation.
